Pustakaar started in 2010, when Anil and Shobha Bhansali moved back to India from the USA. They thought that their sons’ collection of storybooks should be put to good use and started teaching on a volunteer basis in a school at Banjara Hills. They soon realized that there was a key element missing in the overall education of the child. The emphasis was purely on rote learning and focused purely on the syllabus at hand. The children had no access to books outside their prescribed curriculum, nor were they encouraged to participate or explore their curiosity. The wondrous world of imagination that books could expose them to, was completely out of reach of the children here. This was the genesis of the idea to start a program that at the core was a mobile library.
